Understanding WCAG: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines

What Is WCAG?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are a set of internationally recognized standards developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to ensure websites are accessible to all users, including people with disabilities. WCAG aims to make the web a more inclusive place by providing clear, actionable criteria that guide the design and development of accessible digital content.

Why WCAG Matters

Accessibility isn't just good practice — it's essential. Millions of people navigate the web using screen readers, voice controls, keyboard-only access, or other assistive technologies. WCAG ensures that websites work properly for those users, helping to remove digital barriers and promote equal access to information, services, and opportunities.

For companies like Juan and Sons Moving and Delivery Service, following WCAG means providing an inclusive experience for all customers, including those with visual, auditory, cognitive, or motor impairments.

WCAG Principles

WCAG is built around four core principles, often summarized by the acronym POUR:

  1. Perceivable – Information and user interface components must be presented in ways that users can perceive (e.g., with alt text for images and video captions).

  2. Operable – All functionality must be usable through a keyboard and navigable for users with various devices or assistive tech.

  3. Understandable – Content should be transparent and predictable, with easy-to-read text and consistent navigation.

  4. Robust – Content must be compatible with current and future user tools and technologies, including screen readers and other accessibility software.

Levels of Compliance

WCAG is organized into three levels of conformance:

  • Level A (Minimum) – Basic accessibility features.

  • Level AA (Recommended): This level addresses the biggest barriers for users with disabilities and is the legal standard for many organizations.

  • Level AAA (Advanced) – The highest level of accessibility, typically not required but ideal for inclusive design.

At Juan and Sons, we are committed to improving our website's accessibility in alignment with WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards and beyond to ensure our online presence is usable by all community members.
